Resupinate annual polypore with very small round pores. Pore surface brown, with a lighter brown margin, flesh yellowish brown, single tube layer pale grayish brown. On roots, root collars, and butts of trees, sometimes extending up the trunk from the root collar, especially on fallen logs in contact with soil. Similar P. weirii is perennial thus has more than one tube layer, occurs primarily on Thuja plicata and on second-growth Pseudotsuga menziesii, and causes a butt rot rather than a root rot which leads to the trunk breaking above the ground level, where P. sulphurascens victims blow over with a diminished root ball intact.
